Can You Not Spend a Day to Save Your Marriage?
When everything seems to be going wrong and the marriage seems to be over, can you take out a day to try saving it? What’s the point, you ask. Well, now that you are on the verge of separation, why not give it one last try, just for old time’s sake? Even if you do agree, you are not sure your partner will. Tell him/her the same thing: why not visit the counselor as a couple just for a day?
Can one-day marriage counseling really help? Here’s what Jacqueline Summers, psychologist and couples counselor, has to say:
When your relationship is in deep trouble, you may need a concentrated effort that delves more deeply into issues, teaches communication and problem-solving skills, sends you home with a plan, and soothes the emotional pain.
In one of my earlier posts, I said that one-day counseling helps break the ice. At times, you just need a nudge to make an effort. The counseling session can work as that nudge. It can help you make an effort to improve your communication in the relationship. Improved communication is always a sign of improvement in the relationship.
Talking about one-day and half-day intensive counseling sessions, Summers says that you will learn to:
- Rebuild Trust
- Resolve conflicts in a collaborative way
- Heal past hurts and wounds
- Use powerful communication skills
The ‘intensive’ adjective for the one-day counseling is what makes it accomplish so much in a day. Typically, such a session is followed up with further help and counseling, either over the phone or through visits to the counselor.
If your marriage seems to be on the rocks, allow yourself a day to make it better.
