Counseling for Any Relationship

Though many people use the terms interchangeable, there are some differences between counseling types when talking about a specific situation or group.

  • Marriage Counseling
  • Relationship Counseling
  • Couples Counseling

Marriage Counseling is probably the most talked about because it also denotes a legal joining that, if dissolved, has legal consequences. It is difficult for a marriage to break up without anyone noticing when lawyers have to get involved. Marriage counseling is intended to help reconcile and understand the differences between two spouses and help them heal their relationship to find a better level of satisfaction and happiness.

Relationship counseling is the process of counseling those in a relationship. This does not mean that the parties involved are married or even dating partners. Often there are friends and relatives seeking out relationship counseling, even employees needing help dealing with a troublesome relationship in the workplace. This counseling is to assist patients to better manage or reconcile troublesome differences and repeating patterns of distress.

Couple therapy is much like marriage counseling or relationship counseling, but is focused purely on a couple. They may be married, they may not be married. Keep in mind that there are millions of couples who are not legally eligible to marry, but they are a couple nonetheless. Couples counseling can be short term, between 1 to 3 sessions, or long term, between 12 and 24 sessions.

Whichever type of relationship you are in, and whichever type of assistance you need, counseling is available to help you.
