Couples Therapy and Work Relief

For many people, the thought of couples therapy is the equivalent to the phrase “working on your relationship,” which is in turn equivalent, to them, with “work.” And for most people, the mental thought of work is equal to the prospect of something unpleasant, taxing, and giving little benefit for the effort put in.

When couples enter couples therapy, there’s often a sense of a burden and the dreading of what they consider must be a “long journey ahead.” One of the first myths that has to be overcome in couples counseling is that it can be fun, exciting, and ultimately one of the most rewarding experiences a couple can have.

Ideally, therapy can provide a lasting relief from the burden of a restrictive and unfulfilling relationship and lifestyle that is ultimately holding your personal happiness hostage in a series of unhealthy actions and reactions. Is it work to unburden yourselves this way? Yes, work is a part of the process, but is not the only part, and it is not the lasting part.

In our culture, we are used to long workdays and a begrudging sense of “what do we have to do now?” In couples therapy, you can finally drop those conceptions and open up to the possibility of self-exploration.
