How to Choose a Couples’ Counselor

It takes a lot of effort to make the decision to seek counseling. Once you have decided you want to seek therapy/counseling you need to find a good couples’ counselor. Don’t let friends and family decide the counselor for you. It is you who has to visit the counselor so it has to be you who has to choose the counselor.

Dr. Marty Tashman, renowned Marriage and Family Counselor, shares valuable advice on making this decision. In the video at the bottom of this post he shares tips on how a couple should choose a counselor.

Dr. Tashman underlines three factors when choosing a counselor.

  • Your comfort level with the counselor: If the counselor doesn’t make you comfortable in the first interaction, even if it is on the phone, you cannot risk visiting this counselor for you may end up losing both money and time without any improvement in the state of things. Thus, it is important to go to a counselor who lets you talk without any inhibition.
  • His/her work in the field of couples counseling: Dr. Tashman suggests that you find out how much time the counselor devotes to counseling couples. You may find the information on the counselor’s website. If he/she doesn’t have one, just ask. This will give you an idea of how dedicated the counselor is to couples’ counseling.
  • His/her accessibility: Your counselor has got to be accessible. If he/she cannot respond the moment you call, he/she should be able to revert in a couple of hours.

It is also important to check with the counselor about what to expect during the counseling. Dr. Tashman mentions three outcomes you should be looking at

  • Communication: The counseling should result in improved communication.
  • How to effectively deal with conflict: You should be able to control your anger and stop being overwhelmed by your partner’s after counseling.
  • Re-connecting: You should be able to re-connect with your partner at all levels.
