Private Counseling Can Help

There are many times when private counseling can help individuals deal with their personal issues in order to then improve their marriage as a whole.

Once such case involves Jo and Bobby.

Jo had always considered herself a “homebody” and wasn’t particularly interested in busy social engagements. Over the years, it became clearer that Jo’s increasing resistance to going out socially was actually a case of agoraphobia.

People with agoraphobia often have a hard time feeling safe in any public place, especially where crowds gather. Commonly feared places and situations are elevators, sporting events, lines, bridges, public transportation, driving, shopping malls and airplanes.

The fears can be so overwhelming that some people are essentially trapped in their own homes — it’s the only place they feel truly safe, so they don’t venture out into public at all.

Over the years, Jo maintained her steady job and occasionally would go out with Bobby for a dinner date, but gradually her phobia deepened.

This left increasing pressure on Bobby to do any chores or errands outside of the home, as well as left him with the decided absence of a partner outside the confines of the home.

When Bobby told Jo that he was considering divorce, they both agreed to work towards saving the marriage instead, and Jo entered into private counseling to help her deal with her agoraphobia.

Jo needed personal and private help for her agoraphobia in addition to both of them becoming involved in couples counseling. The therapist thought couples counseling was helpful as a supplemental therapy, since it contributed to Jo’s social interaction.

Couples counseling can save a marriage or a failing relationship, however, private counseling can also be vital.
