Scheduling Couples Counseling
When a relationship is at a volatile point and couples counseling is sought, there should be some sort of thought that goes into preparing for your first session. After you and your partner decide that couples counseling is your next step together you will then decide on an actual counselor to go and see. During that phone call where you schedule your appointment there will be the subject of waiting.
How long will it be before your appointment?
This question may seem impatient, but don’t hesitate to ask for an appointment as soon as possible if you need it. For a couple in the middle of a very bad time, having to wait two to three weeks before their first counseling session could be overwhelmingly stressful. In our culture, many people put off asking for an immediate session because they don’t want to come off as rude or needy, but if a quickly scheduled session is necessary to keep you, your partner and your children sane and safe then don’t be afraid to ask for it. Your couples counselor will understand and should be able to accommodate your needs.
Many couples tell their counselors that just the act of making a counseling appointment was enough to relieve some stress in the relationship and ease the tension and arguments. Knowing that some reconciliation and relief was coming served as a temporary band-aid for the couple until their first counseling session.
