What Are Anxiety Victims Like?

We are all individuals and have our own unique personality characteristics, but people with mental disorders often exhibit the same tendencies. That is certainly true of anxiety disorder victims. Here are a few of the characteristics you’ll find among people with anxiety disorder:

  • Sensitivity – People with anxiety are often overly sensitive to external stimuli. They’re the people who think the lights are too bright when no one notices or they’ll believe that it is too cold when everyone around them is comfortable.
  • Feelings of Helplessness – Anxiety disorder victims often find themselves unable to cope with their strong feelings of anxiety. They feel helpless against it and do not trust themselves and their judgments. Their panic attacks often win in the battle of their minds.
  • Control – People with anxiety often try to control themselves in awkward ways. Because their stress is powerful they will either deny it or attempt to hold their emotions in check out of fear. They also worry about what others will think about them and stress over it unnecessarily. They are not in control, but attempt to maintain the illusion of control.
  • Perfectionism – Anxiety victims are often perfectionists. They set their performance goals too high, so high in fact that there is no way to achieve them. If they grew up in unstable homes then they may be overly critical of others, but they will be harder on themselves than on everyone else.
  • Negative Thinking – Anxiety disorder victims always think the worse about a situation than rational thought would allow. They are preoccupied with everything that could go wrong and this often paralyzes them from any action at all.

It is important to realize that everyone experiences each of these symptoms of anxiety at different times in their lives. Most of us, however, only experience them one at a time and for short periods of time. Once we see that we are acting irrationally, we can come back to ourselves and re-enter a state of rational thought to override our negative feelings. Anxiety victims do not have that ability and they will usually experience all or most of these symptoms at one time.

If you think that you or someone you know may have anxiety disorder then find an anxiety counselor to assist you or your friend with their disorder. A little counseling can go a long way.
