Family Therapy Reconnects Marriages
Family Therapy is something that most families attend when things get really difficult and they aren’t sure where else to turn. For some families, however, it is the last stop before a divorce.
It is common for judges to require family therapy if a couple with children has filed for divorce. This is done to ensure that the children understand the changes being put in place, but also as a way to give couples another chance at re-building their lives together. Family therapy, in these cases, is a conduit for couples to take one last moment before jumping on the divorce bandwagon. It is a pause button, giving everyone time to think about what they are doing, who it will affect, and if they want to go through with it.
Chase and I had settled on a divorce, but it was difficult going to make the kids understand. Family therapy was our solution to help and support the kids as much as possible through the divorce. When the therapist asked us to talk about our issues with each other, He told us that it was a way to help alleviate issues in the future, because after all, we had children together and we’d never really be out of each other’s lives, so we might as well work things out amicably.
This couple did work out many of their issues in family therapy and ended up staying married. Family therapy helped them reconnect, even when they had given up.
