Family Therapy Starts with Family

Many families seek out family therapy because their children are depressed and acting out against their family, their peers and their teachers. Often times this pattern of anti-social behavior has been growing for years and is now reaching it’s peak. Children and teenagers are social creatures, but without the access to that social network, they turn in on themselves before turning out against many others.

One way to help your child maintain social contacts is by enrolling them and encouraging activity in a sports program. The importance of exercise and sports in a healthy child’s lifestyle cannot be underestimated and it affects more than just their physical health. The rise in obesity and overweight children in the United States is absolutely one result of the increase in video and computer alternative lifestyles, but these social alternatives negatively affect their social interactive abilities and increases a sense of seclusion, too.

A child or teen that only interacts with others through a computer screen is missing an entire spectrum of social cues and bonding that happens only with face-to-face contact.

Children who are active in sports must also be active mentally and socially because their sports and fitness routines demand that, in order to keep up with schoolwork, they must be organized and on top of things at all times. Children who are active in sports have teammates who they must rely on on the field, and that in turn translates to relationships they can rely on off the field, in social settings.

Many family therapists recommend that your child be active in many different activities because it keeps them socially, mentally and physically grounded and bonded to those around them.
