A Couple’s Mini-Getaways

Vince and Karen were diligently attending marriage counseling for close to 6 months but weren’t seeing many results. Both were very busy with their new business, which had put a good deal of strain on their marriage.

Several years beforehand, they opened a fabric distribution business and pretty soon, were operating entirely in the red. This affected their personal finances as well and put them both in an almost near constant state of worry. They worried that their home might be taken or they’d have to eventually be forced to deal with bankruptcy.

Fortunately, the business began picking up…but the arguing continued. It was if that financial strain had put them in a state of shock they just couldn’t shake. They worked around the clock it seemed and had very little time for each other. As a matter of fact, Karen felt that their arguing was “about the only way we ‘connect’ anymore!”

The counselor had suggested, even during this busy time, that the couple arrange some time away together, no matter how small. The couple resisted at first, then soon arranged a weekly “meeting” of just themselves. One week it was a picnic across the street, another it was a cappuccino at a local cafe.

Albeit small, the couple slowly began arguing less and spending less time fretting over the business. Ironically, it seemed, the business began to improve as well. Connectivity is key, even in today’s busy world. This couple had to start carving out some time for themselves, even if it was small amounts at first.
