Couples Counseling over Extended Time

Many couples will maintain couples counseling throughout their marriage but without the aid of it on a constant basis. Such was the case of Ben and Joline who had entered into couples counseling within their first year of marriage. Both were under enormous financial pressure and Ben had a chronic illness. Their premier year as a couple was not filled with joy and a sense of new beginnings but instead was one of the most difficult years they had experienced.

When they entered counseling, they did so with the expressed intent to save their marriage. Both felt they could easily walk away from such a trying year…and from one another. But marriage counseling helped save their relationship by teaching them much needed stress-coping and communication skills.

Several years later, Ben and Joline entered counseling once more. Joline was preparing to have a child and both were feeling the need to reconnect with the counselor who had done so much in the past to help them during a trying time. Again, the marriage counselor helped them work through the stressors of a new addition to the family.

So this couple, and many others, have relied on counseling as a way to “check in” or glean some guidance during particularly difficult times. While most people think counseling is a “one shot deal,” its reassuring to know that once you’ve established a connection with a counselor, that person is there when you him or her. Whether its a stressful point in your marriage or the two of you just need to reconnect, it’s nice to know there’s a back-up!

  2. I would absolutely recommend counseling as a way to keep communication lines open and moving rather than waiting until they have completely shut down and trying to pry them open again.

The adage that prevention is the best medicine is absolutely true.
