Marriage Counseling – A Chance to Rebuild Trust

Sarah and Jamie had been married over 12 years when Jamie had discovered that Sarah had a brief affair leading up to and including their wedding. Sarah had been seeing a high school sweetheart before she began dating Jamie and the two continued to see each other on a sporadic basis until Sarah pulled the plug on it shortly after her marriage to Jamie. Counseling was required to heal the deep rift this indiscretion caused.

Jamie was shocked when he found out – and unfortunately, he didn’t find out from Sarah but from a mutual friend, leading to the embarrassment and anger. When the two entered couples counseling, they were on their last leg. Jamie didn’t see much hope and had already began divorce proceedings. Sarah was desperate and defeated. An air of anxiety surrounded the two of them.

Couples counseling allowed the two of them to express their deepest pain around this experience in a safe atmosphere. Arguing about it at home had hit a wall and communication had stopped and was replaced with name-calling and stonewalling.

The therapist worked with Sarah and Jamie for over a year now and there is still soreness but there is a movement toward the future. The divorce proceedings have ceased and that alone shows progress.

Simply the act of entering couples counseling fostered a sense of trust and camaraderie. Jamie knew Sarah was serious about healing and building back trust and Sarah showed utter willingness to do what it took to move forward.

Rebuilding trust is never an easy enterprise, but it’s infinitely easier when there is a mediator and a guide throughout the process. Couples counseling offers just that – so you’re not on your own.
