Marriage Counseling, Pre-Marriage
Many couples who are preparing to get married seek counseling prior to their marriage as part of their church’s request. It’s a smart move, before starting a life together. A professional couples counselor can evaluate the couple’s communication skills and spot some “trouble areas” before they become problematic.
Lea and Sam entered into 5 session of pre-marriage counseling 6 months before their wedding and were really happy about the results. According to Sam:
Lea and I were so confident about our abilities to clear the air, you know, just talk with one another. We’ve never really had an argument. We’re usually able to sit down and discuss stuff pretty rationally and be done with it. Move on. But once we met with Phil [the marriage counselor], we realized that we did have some work to do. I began to notice that I always deferred to Lea. Our arguments never lasted long because I kinda always gave in.
I didn’t realize it, but some resentment began building. Especially with the wedding so close. So many decisions seem to go her way. I don’t care much now but how am I going to feel after years of this? Phil encouraged me to speak up more and let my opinions be known. Lea wasn’t used to it at first but she’s becoming more flexible. I feel even better than before. Though of course, we’re both anxious about the wedding!
Marriage counseling isn’t just for problematic times. It can be used to evaluate the state of your relationship and teach you ways to grow closer. Lea and Sam felt more confident entering into their new lives together after only a few sessions with a counselor.
