Marriage Counseling Self-Help
Not all marriage counseling needs to be face to face with a counselor or by phone. There is an entire industry built around self help and you can be your own marriage counselor with the right program.
Self-help marriage counseling programs are a dime a dozen, but there are just a few that I’d recommend. One of them is Mort Fertel’s Marriage Fitness, described as the best marriage self-help program of 2009.
Mort Fertel’s Marriage Fitness program is free to start. You take his assessment by e-mail, which covers 5 basic and key areas of marriage and communication and go from there. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
Another self-help program for married couples I’d recommend is Dr. Frank Gunzberg’s Program For Surviving An Affair. Obviously, this is a specialized program, but if you or your spouse has had an affair then this is the best self-help program in the world for helping you get through it.
Dr. Gunzberg’s program is based on his 31 years in dealing with married couples who have dealt with extra-marital affairs. In that time he has noticed that there are consistent patterns that lead to one of the partners engaging in an affair and he teaches couples how they can communicate better and get their spouse to listen to them. His lessons on overcoming an affair and re-healing the brokenness are very powerful.
Self-help marriage programs are not all great. Some are good, some are better and others are hopeless. I recommend these two programs for any couple who wants to make their marriage better.
