Public Battles or Marriage Counseling

There have been so many news and tabloid stories covering the continually degrading marriage of Jon and Kate, from TLC’s Jon and Kate Plus 8, that it cannot help but have an utterly detrimental effect on the relationship. It can, however, serve as a very public reminder for those going through a troubled time in their marriage.

For many couples who have spent a great deal of time building up friendships and relationships in conjunction with their marriage, there is inevitable discussion of the marriage between the couple and that group of friends. For the Gosselin’s, that group of friends happens to be a slew of reporters and a national audience.

If you are experiencing a troubled time in your marriage or partnership, seeking out the advice of friends is both naturally and often helpful. Seeking out a sounding board within your circle of support is also natural and often helpful. Using your friends as a message board to snipe at your spouse and air your dirty laundry, however, is simply asking for a harsh backlash.

Firstly, you will be forcing your friends to choose sides between you and your spouse, which isn’t fair to either of them. Secondly, you are setting yourself up for a ride on the gossip train to Miscommunication Land. Whatever stories or hardships that you put out in the public eye, they will most likely be twisted just enough that they are hurtful and incorrect by the time they inevitably make it back to your spouse.

Trust your relationship to a qualified marriage counselor and avoid a public battle with your loved one.
