Can You Get Healing In One Session Counseling?
One-session counseling intensives used to be quite popular. Now they are making their way back again. But what makes them such a great choice among counseling options for couples seeking help with their relationships?
Here are some of the reasons one-session counseling sessions are popular and effective:
- Many couples lead busy lives. Today, many women work outside of the home so couples have to juggle two, not one, schedules and fit the counseling in between other family activities. This is even more challenging when there are children involved.
- If a couple can readily identify on their own what the problem in their relationship is then the counselor does not have to cover as much background. The issue can be dealt with head on and directly.
- Some couples cannot afford ongoing relationship counseling. One-session intensives are a less expensive alternative.
- One-session intensives are collaborative by nature, allowing both partners to set their own relationship goals with their counselor as the guide. Unlike regular counseling sessions, the couple chooses what is important to work on, not the counselor. The counseling is tailored to the needs of the couple involved in the relationship.
- Often, a relationship just needs a nudge to move in a positive direction. The couple love each other and want to stay together, but they have found themselves more at odds and need a little help to get over the pain they have caused each other and themselves. A one-session intensive can be that nudge.
- A one-session intensive counseling session is a get-to-the-root-of-the-problem timed intensive designed to hit your issue head on and strengthen your relationship to your spouse or significant other. Since the sessions are based on certain core principles, an effective and practiced counselor can lead you through a series of predefined steps to solve your unique issues.
One-session intensive counseling sessions can be designed around a two-hour plan or a half day plan. To find out which one is right for you, contact a qualified one-session counselor in your area.

As a counsellor I’ve found that one session can often be helpful for individuals. However, for couples it usually takes a few sessions to get a real sense of what’s going on and to define the problem. When people ask me if it’s worth coming in for only one session I always say that some counselling is better than no counselling. If you or your partner are thinking of undertaking relationship counselling, once you find a therapist you like, I suggest going for 3-10 sessions at a minimum to derive the most benefit.
