Does Marriage Counseling Really Work?

Two things are needed in order for marriage counseling to work: a good counselor and your willingness to make your marriage better. While most of the time, a couple will approach a counselor because it is wiling to make a difference to the marriage, there are cases when a couple comes to a counselor just to pacify each other, all the while planning to run away from the marriage.

Marriage counseling works because it doesn’t straightway get into giving you corrective advice. Also, such counseling doesn’t tell you that you are doing things wrong; it provides counseling, not sermons. Now, let us look at what marriage counseling sessions do.

  • They look into the areas of conflict and the potential reasons causing the conflict.
  • They try to understand the perspectives of both spouses.
  • They try to understand the expectations the spouses have of the marriage and each other.
  • They help the couple understand about each other’s expectations and problems.
  • They suggest ways to minimize conflict and revive the relationship.

Now, there are certain things you have got to understand about marriage counseling. It is never too late to make things right in your marriage. And just because you have been staying together melancholically for years, you shouldn’t continue to live like that; the situation can improve. Your willingness to make a positive change plays a big role in changing your relationship. And if your spouse is not willing to visit the counselor, don’t throw a tantrum; go on your own. Individual counseling will also help your marriage.
