Last Shot the Winner in Marriage Counseling
Kathy and Tom had been married for 18 years, the past 7 of which had been unhappy and unfulfilling for both of them. With two teenage children and a distance between them that seemed too vast to cross anymore, they agreed marriage counseling would be their last effort to make things work before they separated. Neither one of them thought that the marriage could be saved, but rather that they owed the appearance of one last chance to each other and to the children.
Kathy said:
I had no intention of staying married to Tom when we entered into marriage counseling. Honestly, my biggest hope was that we could get past some of the animosity that we’d built and create a better foundation for communication before the divorce. I was going through the motions, for the most part, although I did want things to be better between us. I mean really, we had two kids together and we would always be a part of each other’s lives, so why not make things friendlier?

I hoped that we could work things out in marriage counseling, but I didn’t think it was going to work. I wanted to be able to say that I tried my absolute hardest to make our lives together work because I didn’t want the kids to think that we just called it quits without trying.
Its very hard to imagine that this couple, who for all intents and purposes walked into marriage counseling with the objective of going through the motions before they filed for divorce, were ever going to come out in a successful and happy marriage. But they did. In marriage counseling they began to talk again, to discuss differences and issues that had caused anger and pain for years, and to learn to love one another again.
It’s never too late for marriage counseling, even if you think you’ve already given up.
