Marriage Counseling For Anger Management

There are many ways for anger to affect a marriage. Avoidance of anger or encouragement of it may seem miles apart and yet each often results in troubled marriages that require the sure and steady hand of a trained marriage counselor to treat and understand. The ability to balance anger and compassion, understanding and empathy, irritation and joy and boundaries are essential skills to a happy, healthy marriage. Essential skills do not necessarily mean common skills, however, and they are often learned and practiced by following the advice and techniques of a marriage counselor or therapist.

Anger Types and Marriage Counseling to Help

  • Reactive Anger is a slowly burning anger that is more commonly seen as resentment. For many who feel reactive anger, they do not let others know outright that they are angry. This isn’t the kind of anger that is always self-known, sometimes the source of resentment is as much a mystery to the individual feeling as to whom it is directed towards. The anger often takes on other forms such as apathy, doing little or nothing, ignoring their partner’s wants and needs.
  • Quick Anger or Sudden Anger shows with little to no warning and are incredibly damaging. Very different from Reactive Anger, sudden anger appears almost from nowhere and tends to be unfocused, hurting everyone in its path. People who have Quick or Sudden Anger often find great relief in letting go and losing control of their anger, but can be a danger to those around them and are almost always hurtful.

If your marriage is experiencing problems and one or both partners needs anger management, talk to your marriage counselor to see what kind of help is available.
