Marriage Counseling for Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Marriage counseling is a form of therapy that deals with a wide variety of marital and relationship problems. Infidelity, anger, resentment, abuse or simply the natural separation that can happen in relationships – all of these things are common issues that couples bring to a marriage counselor to help them deal with. Of the many personal disorders and illnesses that can cause hardship in a marriage, few are as difficult to diagnose and deal with a Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Marriage Counseling when one spouse has NPD can be a challenging battle. The relationship often revolves around meeting the narcissist’s needs and wants at all times while the rest of the family’s needs go unnoticed. Much of the initial damage in such a relationship is dulled because the narcissist is skilled at manipulating a situation in order to best meet his or her needs. If there is a problem and the non-NPD spouse stands up and demands that their own needs be met, the NPD spouse will turn the discussion back in on itself and manipulate the other into agreement and a complete reversal of their earlier position.

A Narcissist:

  • Feels grandiose and self important even if those thoughts aren’t supported by reality
  • Obsesses with fantasies about unlimited success, fame, power or omnipotence
  • Believes he is unique and special and that only other unique people will understand him
  • Feels a sense of entitlement
  • Displays arrogance and demands constant respect

It takes a lot of therapy and marriage counseling in order to help a couple that includes a person with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
