Marriage Counseling for Sexual Addiction
Each year, many marriages are shattered as a result of sexual addition. Sexual addition isn’t always what people think it is. Sexual addition can be characterized by a pattern of repeated sexual relationships involving a succession of lovers with the intent of using them only to satisfy sexual urges. It can also be characterized as the compulsive searching for multiple partners, a fixation on a specific partner, masturbation or compulsive sexuality in a specific relationship.
As with all addictions, it has a negative impact on both the addict and on family members and loved ones and eventually this negative pattern increases as the disorder progresses. It is interesting to note that, as with many additions, the addict usually has to intensify the addictive behavior over time in order to achieve the same results.
For some individuals with this disorder, it does not progress beyond compulsive masturbation or the use of pornography, but for others, the addiction can involve illegal activities. These activities could include behaviors such as exhibitionism, voyeurism, obscene phone calls or rape.
For many marriages dealing with sexual addiction, the emphasis is usually on the use of external objects such as pornography which eventually degenerates the relationship. It is also common to see one partner focus so much energy on sex in the marriage that the other partner eventually loses all interest in sex, as they feel that they are simply an object being used.
Sexual addiction is a real disorder and marriage counselors can help couples in need.
