Marriage Counselors See Them All
There are relatively predictable stages to long term relationships and marriage counselors work with couples and partners in every stage. Marital stages are also referred to as relationship stages because a simple marriage license seldom makes any difference in the complex emotional and psychological stages that accompany a couple long term. In other words, legally married or not, long term relationships usually follow a pretty predictable pattern.
Of all the stages in a relationship, the Romance Stage, sometimes called the Honeymoon Stage or the Infancy stage, is by far the most discussed and studied, but also the stage that counselors see the list in their offices. This makes sense when you consider that this stage is popular common and exciting. In this stage, there is a feeling of well-being and physical desire for each other that is intense, new and exciting, with all of the biochemical and emotional changes that accompany it. There are seldom couples in this stage that seek out treatment because, frankly, they are so happy to be together that the downside of their match just isn’t readily apparent yet.
Marriage counselors usually see couples in a long term relationship after they have passed throughout the heady excitement of the Romance or Honeymoon stage. When this stage ends, however, is when many find themselves desperate to get it back and in the offices of a counselor.
One of the ways in which a marriage counselor can help couples is by helping them understand the different stages that a long term relationship generally goes through. When a couple realizes that they are not alone in dealing with the issues, thoughts and troubles that are found in later stages of a relationship, it can change they way they deal with them.
