Marrige Counseling Questions at the Start
Deciding to move ahead with marriage counseling a big decision for a couple to make. Marriage counseling is an investment of money, time, and energy that can result in lifelong benefits for both you and your spouse. With such a heavy investment of yourself in this endeavor, you want to make sure you enter into it seriously and after careful consideration.
The truth is, if you and your spouse are going to make a serious commitment to your marriage by committing to counseling until you’ve worked through your issues, you may be looking at commitment of once a week for up to six months, sometimes longer. Before giving the green light to this long-term journey, there are some recommendations that you could take in, to help ensure that your decision was made wisely.
Before you Decide on a Marriage Counselor:
- Ask for recommendations! So many people avoid asking friends or relatives for a recommendation for a good marriage counselor. Often people feel that, by asking, they are admitting that there is a problem. Honestly, if you’re looking for a marriage counselor, chances are that your friends and family already know you’re having issues. If they had good luck with a marriage counselor, why don’t you ask them for advice?
Your Family Doctor is also a great resource for recommendations for a counselor, as are church ministers or priests. - Get the Big Concerns Out Immediately! If there are any big show-stopping concerns that you have about a counselor, ask them in an initial phone interview before you take up your valuable time, and theirs, by setting up an appointment. For instance, many couples feel strongly about the need for a Christian counselor, while many other couples feel just as strongly about a need for a non-religious counselor. If this type of question is a concern of yours, ask ahead of time.
