Not So Immediate Marriage Solution

Quick fixes are a part of our American Society as a whole, and many people wish and hope that same mentality can apply to marriages. For those that believe in a quick fix, they should first understand the difference between and immediate problem and a long standing problem.

An immediate problem is something that has come up quickly and specifically and is causing a major issue in the couple’s ability to communicate and relate to one another. For those couples dealing with an immediate problem, then one session marriage counseling can be an enormous amount of help and benefit them by serving as a mediator to help solve that immediate problem.

For those with long standing, deep seated issues, a quick fix just isn’t going to be possible. For these clients, marriage counseling is a process and the more you can be at peace with its varying levels, the more you and your partner stand to learn from it long term.

As one seasoned couples counselor put it:

Many couples enter into marriage counseling wanting immediate answers. Counselors often have to explain that these problems took years to develop and they aren’t going to fix themselves over night. Counseling is a discovery process and one that can take some time. In counseling, the couple will need to explore their issues and deal with history of origin issues as well.

Immediate problems can sometimes be served with immediate solutions, but many issues brought to marriage counseling are going to require multi-session counseling to begin to understand the issues involved and how to correct them.
