Quickie Vegas Marriage, Lasting Happiness
A quickie Vegas Style marriage doesn’t inevitably mean a quickie divorce. Many couples have married on a spur-of-the-moment decision and found the path to happiness and success.
Shelly and Tim were best friends for years. They had never dated, but often supported one another in separate romantic relationships.
Tim and I were just graduating from college and a group of us were going to go to San Diego for a two week “post grad” road trip. After one friend got unexpectedly sick and the couple going with us broke up suddenly, we decided that we would go ourselves. With no group to guide the driving plan, we went everywhere that seemed interesting to us, including Vegas. As stereotypical as it sounds, we got really drunk, decided our friendship was the ultimate formula for happiness and we got married. He gave me his high-school ring as a wedding ring. It was exciting and fabulous and didn’t seem entirely real.
Shelly and I got married with no planning and no thought that we would ever, ever be together like that. Afterward, on the drive back home, it seemed like a story we were going to break to everyone! The reality set in when we got home and realized that, even though we were best friends, being married was very, very different.
Tim and Shelly entered into marriage counseling after they had been married for a year. Instead of deciding on a quick divorce, they looked at everything that had brought them together in the first place and asked their marriage counselor to help them experience the steps that they missed the first time around.
