The Marriage Counselor and the Accountant

The growing change in marriage environments has been a trend back to when many women stayed home to raise the children while the husbands worked. For years that trend was in a marked reversal and a two career family was a major majority, however the past 10 years have seen a marked increase in marriages where one spouse stayed home and one spouse worked.

When one spouse is working and bringing home a salary and the other spouse is home without an actual income coming in, financial issues can often become a battlefield in the marriage.

Especially in the American culture where many of the women staying home to raise children are college educated with high-paying careers left behind, the “culture of income” can create an instability in marriages.

It is common to see marriages that end due to fights over money, debts, gambling and income issues, but this is complicated even further when one of the spouses is not working.

The key that a marriage counselor will bring to the attention of the couple is that the finances in any marriage should be a shared responsibility. Any big decisions should be made together the finances should be discussed and controlled by both and this should all be done irrespective of who is the major ‘bread winner’.

So many couples find themselves fighting regularly over money issues and in the end find themselves divorcing when really all they needed was to find themselves a good marriage counselor and a good accountant.
