How To Manage Your Anger
If you saw the movie Anger Management with Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler then you probably remember the scene when the therapist (played by Nicholson) is sitting in the passenger’s seat of a vehicle being driven by Sandler during rush hour and Nicholson asks Sandler to sing a refrain of “I Feel Pretty”. The truth is, anger isn’t pretty. Nor is anger management. But the latter is necessary.
And it’s no laughing matter.
Every day, thousands of people across the country get angry and deal with it ineffectively. Sometimes it leads to violence. In order to prevent things from getting out of control, you need to make sure that you have a good handle on your anger and manage it well.
Here are five ways to manage your anger more effectively:
- First, rate your anger on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being mildly angry and 10 being intensely angry.
- Take a step back and put some distance between yourself and the source of your anger.
- Understand the origin of your anger.
- Think about how your anger makes you feel less in control.
- Develop a plan to regain control without taking your anger out on others.
Anger can often damage relationships if you let it. It’s up to you not to let it. Take control of your anger and manage it before it manages you.
