Media Glorification of Unhealthy Relationships
There are many media outlets that glorify the act of taking revenge on a cheating spouse or partner. From songs about breaking car windows to slashing tires and taking a baseball bat to the headlights, vehicles seem to take the brunt of the anger in both songs and video. For all the popularity of love in songs and video, the revenge fantasy is almost equally popular.
The revenge fantasy, when carried out in the media, is an example of taking something painful and illogical and letting go without consequences or control. While some might argue that love is illogical and often about letting go, there is no reality where consequences and some control do not come into play.
The reality of the revenge fantasy, be it a verbal smack down or actually taking a baseball bat to your partner’s car headlights, is that there real consequences. Physical violence or the threat of violence is painful and causes fear and mistrust, which are two things that cannot live in conjunction with a healthy relationship. Moreover, the threat of violence or the actual act will most likely land you in jail.
Violence and revenge fantasies have no place in the real world.
If you or your partner is having anger management issues, there are many resources available for you to get help. You can learn to control your anger and get to the root causes of your actions with individual therapy.
If you and your partner are dealing with infidelity issues, there is help in the form of couples counseling to help you deal with the pain and mistrust and heal together.
No matter how dramatic the media can make it look, getting back at someone is not what a healthy and loving relationship is about.
