Saving Your Relationship

There are steps that can be taken to help any couple save or better their relationship. The important thing is to know that you are not alone in having problems in your partnership. They can be solved and you can find happiness together if you are willing to work for it.

Steps to Save a Relationship

  • Find out what your issues are. Many times, most times actually, the fighting and arguing isn’t focused on the actual problem, but instead serves as a way to vent the frustration and anger about the problem. Fighting over who is going to do the dishes isn’t really about the dishes, but about taking on roles and responsibilities and mutual respect.
  • Rebuild trust in your relationship. If you are a couple who has dealt with infidelity issues, this can be a major hurtle, but it can be overcome. Working on intimacy issues and repairing the emotional damage takes time and a lot of effort. The issues that caused the infidelity must not be overshadowed by the act itself. Finding out what the main problem was before the intimacy is an important step towards rebuilding a newfound trust.
  • Talk and share, even if you don’t want to. A major factor in repairing a relationship is the small changes that need to take place in the way you communicate. Take at least 20 minutes a day to sit down uninterrupted with your partner to verbalize your feelings, and listen to theirs. The increase in emotional bonding will also help increase physical intimacy.

All of these steps are parts of the couples counseling process that your counselor can help you work on together to better your relationship.
