Free Marriage Advice Isn’t Easy

It’s not easy to find free marriage advice. But then again, if you do find it you might not want to heed it. You do have to consider the source.

If a marriage counselor offers you free marriage advice, it might be a credible source but then why is someone who normally charges for a service providing it for free? There may be a problem with that person’s credentials. Maybe they lost their license or maybe it’s a fraud attempting to perpetrate a licensed professional. There are a couple of things to think about.

Your friends giving you free marriage advice is another matter. But what is their track record?

One man I know likes to give advice on everything and he gives freely. But he doesn’t have much credibility in the way of marriage advice (he’s been married five times). With that kind of track record, perhaps we should all find another source for marriage advice.

If you are going to accept free marriage advice then do so from someone that you trust and that you know has a proper track record. Someone who has been married to the same person for 50 years and who has only been married once likely knows how to manage a successful marriage.

Sometimes you just want to talk to someone who will listen and you are really seeking advice. Maybe you’d like to hear from someone who has faced similar circumstances to your own. In that case, their failure could lead to your success in free marriage advice.

Bottom line, pick your advisors carefully. Good marriage advice doesn’t always have to come from a counselor that you pay. It can be free. But you should consider the source before acting on any advice – free or otherwise.

  1. I love the term “marriage advice”. As one wag has said, “Opinions are like noses; everybody has one!”. I think much of the advice people receive can be put in this category too. Counseling should come from someone who is gifted and trained in counseling and who has, as you say, has a track record. I work on my car some but that does not make me a mechanic! So it is with the term counselors. Pick a good one.. a trained and licensed one!

  2. I like you point about marriage advice. The quality of advice does not depend on whether you pay or don’t pay, it matters on discerning whether the individual who is offering the advice has something to truly offer.
