Assistance Therapy with Animals
Animal-assisted therapy is a type of therapy that involves an animal to help the therapist with the fundamental treatment of a patient. Animal-assisted therapy is designed to improve the physical, social, emotional, and sometimes even the cognitive functioning of patients in many different environments. In addition, there are also many educational and motivational treatments for children and other participants that are often used in an educational facility.
For many people suffering from anxiety disorders and social disorders, therapy with pets is often an invaluable way to make an emotional connection with the intense anxiety or fear that the recipient of those affections will reject them. A teenager with intense social problems and issues stemming from a lack of self confidence often experiences an extreme social isolation issue. Therapy dogs being used in school programs provide such students with not only the drive to go to school, especially on therapy days, but also the much needed respite during the day from anxiety and fear in the hallways and classrooms.
For the elderly, the social isolation felt in nursing homes and assisted living facilities can be emotionally devastating. Therapy with animals is a tremendously help in allowing seniors to interact and relax with the types of animals they may very well have had for decades as companions, but which they can no longer have in their current living facility.
There are different types of therapy with animals, including animal-assisted activities.
