Family Therapy for Parents Raising Special Needs Children

Family therapy is an incredibly beneficial tool for those raising children with disabilities. Many children have or are at risk for chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional conditions. These conditions also require health and related services beyond that required by children generally.

There are many obstacles facing families raising children with special health care need. These obstacles often feel overwhelming and drain the emotional and mental strength of those who are asked to be the strongest. Family therapy helps families deal with the high demands of personal self required to raise a child with special health needs.

Therapy may involve assistance with coping skills, depression and guilt. It may also branch out to include those services that families in this situation often need, including community resources, educational services and long-term planning. Depression and anger are two very common emotions for parents in this difficult situation, and therapy is often a way for families to talk about their hopes, dreams and daily frustrations and fears. By discussing these emotions and thoughts in an open and supportive environment, the isolation and resentment is often abated and a healthier support base is created.

Working with a professional and skilled family therapist, families can discover and learn to deal with their personal and emotional fears and find new and more satisfying ways to live and love with hope and confidence.
