Help Finding A Therapist
One of the main concerns for any individual who is seeking out mental health counseling or therapy is the type of therapist they will find. There are so many different types of professional designations and certifications and a simple search under therapist will yield thousands of results. Understanding how therapists are certified, what kind of training they offer and how you can empower yourself in the therapy process are all important elements of your therapy search.
Therapy and Education
For many individuals, there is a comfort in knowing a larger group or regulatory force is in place to help them decide what therapists have easily recognizable and acceptable accreditation’s. The AAMFT, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists has key standards for its Clinician Members. Education, training, internships, licensing exams and final licensure are all required.
The regulatory requirements in most states are substantially equivalent to the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists Clinical Membership standards. After graduation from an accredited program, a period – usually two years – of post-degree supervised clinical experience is necessary before licensure or certification. When the supervision period is completed, the therapist can take a state licensing exam, or the national examination for marriage and family therapists conducted by the AAMFT Regulatory Boards. This exam is used as a licensure requirement in most states.
If you have been seeking a qualified and licensed Therapist but have been unsure of where to turn for your needs, you can trust the AAMFT to be able to offer you qualified and licensed professionals that can help you with your therapy needs.
