Marriage Therapy Replacing Shopping Therapy

Few couples plan on taking the “for richer or poorer” part of their vows literally, but the economy has seen many couples endure both extremes in a short amount of time. Being plunged into financial strain has caused many couples to give into that strain and to seek out marriage therapy in order to stay together. In what is a clearly unpredicted pattern, many couples who would have sought out a dissolution of their marriage are seeking out counseling because they simply can’t afford to split up with their finances in their current state.

Interestingly, one of the biggest previous forms of therapy for many couples was shopping therapy. Have a fight? Smooth it over with roses. Sex life getting tired? How about a romantic trip to Tahiti for a week. Kids driving you crazy? Bring ‘em to Disney for a vacation and remember what it’s like to be a kid again yourself. All of these solutions could put a balm on many marriages and tide them over through rough patches, but without the finances to afford those extravagances anymore, frustration and tension is mounting. After all, who can think about a romantic getaway when you’re a month behind on the mortgage with no help in sight?

With shopping therapy no longer an option for many couples who have taken a hit in the current economy, marriage therapy is being employed more and more to help couples learn to get over the rough patches together, in a more traditional way.
