Depression after childbirth is called postpartum depression. It is a difficult illness that is thought to be brought on by hormonal changes after giving birth.

Post partum depression goes beyond the symptoms, thoughts and feelings of typical new mother blues. Post partum depression lasts longer and is more severe than the typical low period of hormonal change after giving birth. Postpartum depression can begin anytime within the first year after childbirth.
Some symptoms of severe post partum depression are:
- Thoughts of hurting the baby
- Thoughts of hurting yourself
- Not having any interest in the baby
