The Importance of the Right Couples Therapist

Couples Therapy involves deep and thoughtful discussion and emotional investment about highly personal issues. Because of the personal nature of these issues, therapy should be more than the result of choosing a counselor out of the yellow pages and sticking with them no matter what. Couples counseling involves a trust between the counselor and the clients, as well as an amount of trust in the type of therapy that is agreed upon.

Finding the right counselor is important for both partners in the relationship. Where one partner may need to work on one type of issue, the other partner may have entirely different needs and yet both have to be met in order to heal the relationship. By working with the right therapist, a couple can receive the help that they need both as individuals and as a couple.

Therapy Types

  • Focus on Past Events: some therapy types focus on what has happened in the past and how it is effecting the now and the future. In order to change the negative future, this type of therapy helps to resolve past issues.
  • Focus on the Now: some therapy types help couples dealing with issues that are happening now in the present, such as a sudden change of life. Dealing with an illness or family issue ongoing requires a different focus.
  • Focus on the Self: Dealing with thoughts and behaviors and the ways in which they are interpreted internally is another therapy type.

Couples therapy is both personal and dynamic, so as a couple you have to decide which therapist is right for your relationship.
