Therapy and Counseling for Children with ADD
It is often the ones who have the least control and who cannot ask for help that are themselves the most in need of it. When children have problems and medical conditions that severely affect their lives it could be a great help to them if a family counselor was involved who could support them and guide them through social and personal problems. Usually, however, it isn’t until much later in a child’s life that a therapist is called into help, and much damage has already been done.
Children with ADD
For children with Attention-Deficit Disorder, personal and social problems caused by uncontrolled and often uncontrollable impulses at home and in school. The primary area of difficulty for these children is inconsistent control over attention and impulses which then lead to experiences of failure academically, socially, and within the boundaries of the family group. After years of these failures, children with ADD often begin to feel demoralized and hopeless. This is typically when a counselor or therapist is brought it, when the child is in late childhood at around the age of 10. Much of the damage to the child’s social skills and academic performance have already taken place.
Therapy for ADD
Therapy and counseling for children with Attention Deficit Disorder helps the child not only deal with their condition, but how to deal with the social reproductions of the condition. Working in conjunction with the Family Doctor and medications, techniques and tools can be used to increase attention span and do better academically. The therapist, however will also treat the whole child, helping them understand their behaviors on a social level and giving them the tools they need to begin healing their own self-esteem and find support in those around them.
