Therapy For a New World
Many of life’s exciting adventures turn out to be a lot more work than we had planned, and international moving is no exception. The reasons for moving overseas vary from the personal goal of adventure to the idea of starting over to the simple fact that your company moved overseas and took your job with it. No matter what the reasons are behind it, many people who move overseas experience personal pain and anxiety for which they seek individual therapy.
Most people do not seek out therapy until their culture shock has moved beyond the initial phases.
The later stages of culture shock are difficult and often overwhelming.
Individual Therapy for Culture Shock
Re-Integration
During this stage, the person generally is often reluctant to accept the differences that they encounter in their newly adoptive environment. Anger, frustration and hostility are common. In this stage, people start to idealize life “back home” and mentally refer to the new culture as inferior.
Autonomy
Autonomy is the first stage of acceptance. The person begins to rise above the turmoil and depression and feel more like their old self, but with a new awareness. They start to accept the differences between their old culture and the new one and feel they can positively accept both. More confident and better able to cope with problems, many feel that they are no longer feeling as isolated and alone.
Individual Therapy for overseas moving and culture shock helps sufferers understand that what they are feeling is normal and even common when adjusting to a new culture. Any life altering adjustment can cause you to look back in awe and wonder why you made the decision to change in the first place.
