Therapy Forms for OCD
For families with children who have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, a form of Anxiety Disorder, treatment is one of the main goals. It is important to know that there are treatments and therapies available for children and adults alike with OCD and many of them are very successful.
One of the most effective forms of therapy for OCD is a type of behavior therapy that includes desensitization and relearning. This involves a method of exposure and response prevention therapy that has been found to be extremely successful.
Using this method, the OCD sufferer is exposed to the objects or situations that trigger obsessions, fear, and anxiety. They are then prohibited from engaging in the usual compulsive response that accompanies this trigger.
A trained and experienced therapist will work with the person over many sessions to identify the obsessions and will help the patient understand that the effects of their thoughts are not catastrophic and that the anxiety surrounding those triggers does eventually dissipate even if the compulsive aspect is not followed. The aim of this type of therapy is to teach people to control their anxiety without having to rely on ritualized behavior patterns.
The intense anxiety that accompanies the usual triggers eventually subsides and the person learns that they can acknowledge and ignore or pass through the accompanying anxiety. It is common for the patient to see that, through this type of therapy, their obsessions eventually disappear in addition to the anxiety.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is responsive to treatment, and the sooner treatment is sought out the sooner your family can move past a realm of ritualized behavior and on to a healthy lifestyle. Anxiety therapy is very effective for OCD.
